Sow 2 seeds in a 7cm pot and keep in a warm place, preferably a propagator. When the seeds have germinated put in a bright place but keep pretty warm, for instance a south facing window sill. Melons wont grow much in the polytunnel until nights warm up in May or June. In the polytunnel I dig small holes about 60cm apart where the plants will finally be planted out and fill them with well rotted FYM, about half a bucket per plant. Then I cover the FYM with soil and ground cover. I plant the plant through the ground cover, when it grows out of its pot, and water well. I let melons sprawl around on the ground. They will send several branches out from the centre of the plant and form a great mat underfoot.

Melons have both male and female flowers. The female flowers have a tiny melon at the base. It may help to try and pollinate the flowers. If they are not pollinated you will see the little melon at the base of the female flower turn yellow and fall off. Cold nights may also prevent fruit setting. After a while they usually manage to set fruit whether I try to hand pollinate or not. If you want to try and hand pollinate, use a small water colour paint brush. Find a male flower and rub the brush over the stamen to pick up some pollen. Then run it over the stigma on the female flower.
